Doug Copley’s Lineside Images & The David Odd Collection
Speaker – David Sharp & Roger Hallatt
David and Roger return to Barrow Hill to present another selection from the Peak Railway Association’s legacy collections. Tonight’s film, Tinsley Yard, MPD and up to Smithywood Coking Plant, features footage from the 1970s, 80s and 90s and starts in Tinsley Yard, which has changed enormously. Today, a minor rump of sidings handles some steel traffic but the hump yard is now a vast M&S distribution depot, the reception sidings are a Newall & Wright container terminal and the MPD is the Mercure Sheffield Parkway Hotel. The branch up to Smithywood is now the Blackburn Valley Trail. The former Great Central line from Wincobank Junction up to Barnsley had closed in 1966 and had been reduced to the three miles or so to Smithywood Coking Plant. The coking plant closed in 1986. The branch also served Roe Brothers’ scrapyard. Tinsley West Junction signal box held a fascination for Doug and features heavily in the film.
After the break, Roger will show more steam gems from the David Odd slide collection, with images from the 1950s and 60s.
